Process :: Chamber :: House

The House of Representatives has several functions: passing new laws, considering amendments, passing resolutions.

House ChamberThe House meets, every two years to do its job for the People of Texas. For example, they will meet in 2005, 2007, 2009 and so on. When the House meets, it is called being "in session."

The House has some special responsibilities that differ from the Senate (opens new window). The primary difference is that if a bill comes up for consideration, it can start in either the House or Senate Chamber. If, the bill involves raising or spending State money, then it must start in the House chamber.

When does the House meet?
The first day of session begins on the second Tuesday in January at noon on odd numbered years, and continues for no more than 140 days. Typically, the session will last through the last week in May or the first week in June.
