Why is the Capitol in Austin?
Austin was not the first choice for the location of the Capital. In fact, the Capitol has been in a dozen other places around Texas before it was moved to Austin.

In 1838, the Republics President, Mirabeau B. Lamar, suggested that the new Capital should be in an area called Waterloo.

Beautiful landscapes, lots of natural resources and a central location, made Waterloo a good choice. Land was purchased and the name was changed from Waterloo to Austin, in honor of Stephen F. Austin.
